Weekend photos: Beaches and ferries and lakes, oh my!

In addition to the recent hike on the West Coast Trail, I enjoyed a few smaller adventures on Vancouver Island recently. Enjoy the photos!

Besides the beaches on the trail, we visited Quadra Island and found some pretty beaches there.

Tidepools with crabs, as well as tiny fish and shrimp (not shown).

Comox Harbour

Rebecca Spit. Of course, with a name like that, I had to visit!

I also took a hike in the Paradise Lakes area of Strathcona Provencial Park.

Paradise Meadows

Battleship Lake

Of course, a trip like this was also all about the ferries (all told, including the tiny "ferry" that took us down the lake to start the backpack trip, we rode 5).

Large BC Ferries vessels to take us from Tsawassen (Vancouver BC) to Nanaimo.

Leaving Vancouver, Mt. Baker dominates the skyline to the south.

There's a sharp line where the muddied waters of the Fraser River flow into the Salish Sea.

The small ferries that serve Quadra and the other islands are open-ended like the Washington State Ferries, not having to face big water.

The ferry that took us back to the US, the privately-run Blackball ferry Coho (and the price told us the difference it makes to have a little state backing!) was large and seaworthy, which was a nice thing as the day was wildly windy and the crossing more than a little rough. I was very pleased that I managed to keep my lunch where I'd put it, but didn't do a lot of photography on the crossing from Victoria to Port Angeles.

Crossing the Straight of Juan de Fuca.

We'll finish with a couple of shots of the very pretty Victoria, BC.

I like a good mural :)

That's all for now! I'm off on another long hike, so for the next couple of weeks, look for re-run bits of flash fiction on the weekends, and otherwise we can all take a rest.

    1. Feels a great deal less overrun than the Seattle area beaches, but, then, it was a bit harder to get to!
